One of the most frustrating aspects of battling the bulge: Even experts don’t agree on what really works for weight loss. So a pair of twins put the most popular diets to the test:. One went on a very low fat diet, while the other chose a low carb diet. Their diet voyage and results were reported by Yahoo Shine on Jan. 29.
One brother, Chris, cut his fat intake to two percent. The other brother, Xand, boosted his intake of protein and fat while eliminating all forms of sugar and starchy carbs, including flour and fruit. They followed the same exercise routine. The results showed dramatic differences:
- Following the plan prescribed by traditional low carb diets, Xand ate his fill of meat, eggs and fat. He felt sluggish, and suffered from brain fog. However, he lost the most weight, shedding a total of nine pounds on the high protein, low carb diet. He noted that because he cut his carbs so much, his plan was ketogenic. - Chris, however, had more energy but admitted that he was constantly hungry. Although he lost some weight, he snacked constantly and felt bored by meals such as pasta without olive oil or cheese.
The twins talked with scientists about their results. In a Jan. 27 interview with the Daily Mail, they concluded that neither approach was effective for long-term weight loss maintenance. They also were concerned about the processed food and sugar involved in the low-fat plan.
“We interviewed some amazing scientists who showed us that a combination of fat and sugar (such as in milk chocolate or ice cream) has a similar effect on your brain to cocaine,” said the twins.
Their message to other dieters: “If you want to lose weight it will be much easier if you avoid processed foods made with sugar and fat. These foods affect your brain in a completely different way from natural foods and it’s hard for anyone to resist eating too much.”
- If you want to try a low-fat plan, make sure to include variety in your snacks. While they’re low in calories, endless servings of raw veggies can get boring. So consider air-popped or reduced fat popped popcorn such as LesserEvil Black & White Kettle Corn.
