The Haven Writing Retreat presented by acclaimed author, Laura Munson, was a pleasant surprise, offering much more than expected.. Laura’s writing retreat is not a series of lectures on “How to write and Get Published.” She did address the world of writing and publishing, but achieved much more in her interactive, small groups – giving time to talk, create, write and relax; a charming, “safe place.”
Miss Munson chose the historical Tubac Golf Resort and Spa, which welcomes group activities, because of the similarity to her Montana ranch retreats. In both settings among the outdoors with mountains as a backdrop, Laura kept the activities and atmosphere of her Haven. The small group stayed together for all meals, enjoyed in a private dining room.
The morning activity included writing from prompts. Laura joined in writing to the prompts, and reading each aloud. This added to the camaraderie and enjoyment of the experience.
Afternoons, groups of two scheduled meetings with Laura privately; which allowed the other attendees a mixture of activities during this free time. These included a choice of some private time for writing, the Tubac Spa, or a birding trip. Evenings were spent listening as a couple of attendees read from their own writings. Personal writings varied from personal thoughts and learning experiences, to horses, a trip to Africa, and living through the massacre at Gabrielle Giffords’ meeting in Tucson a few years ago. The best part was the total acceptance of each person’s writing, while suggestions to improve were supplied. New and creative ideas were formed.
Tubac Golf Resort and Spa was an excellent setting. The restaurant supplied all meals in a private meeting room. The food was varied and excellently prepared. The service was beyond reproach. The resort is built around the original Otero ranch house and silo. A beautiful replica of a mission sets off the beauty of the grounds. A gift shop, southwestern furniture store and other shops are available. Behind the buildings, the golf greens act as a foreground to the beautiful Santa Rita Mountains. Guests could meander among the shops on afternoons, write in their rooms, or go visit the nearby Tubac Presidio, the oldest of three missions built by Father Kino in Southern Arizona: Tubac, Tumacacori, and San Xavier, outside Tucson.
Laura Munson’s Writing Retreat developed lasting friendships as well as writing skills. A totally enjoyable experience. Check out her website for a retreat near you, or attend one on her Montana ranch.
