Tonight (Nov 18, 2013) the Top 10 singers on “The Voice” will take the stage to sing for your votes, texts, tweets and iTunes downloads. With the power now in the hands of the viewers, every performance is critical and song choice is crucial.
Team Adam still has all three of his contestants left. Last week Will Champlin’s take on Imagine Dragon’s “Demons” was Team Adam’s best performing song on the iTunes charts, but James Wolpert did turn some heads with his energetic performance and Tessanne Chin reminded us all that she has some serious power. This week I would look for James to go back to doing things that are more in his comfort zone while Will aims once again to bring the emotion during his performance. I feel that Tessanne is the singer that needs the best performance this week. She needs to show that she can do more than just hit big notes.
Team Blake also has all three of its singers left. Cole Vosbury was the team’s highest charting member and seems to be developing a real fan base. On the other end of the spectrum, Austin Jenckes didn’t do very well on the iTunes charts, but clearly he picked up enough phone and text votes to carry him through. Ray Boudreaux had a solid week. By doing a love song he elevated himself and showed he was capable of doing some very emotional stuff. All three of these guys are likeable and Blake Shelton knows how to win the show so I think he will pick songs for them that are in their wheelhouses. I don’t anticipate anything crazy, just more quality.
Team Christina’s Josh Logan was in the bottom three last week and ended up being sent home, but that in no way diminishes the power of her team. Matthew Shuler owned the iTunes charts. His version of “Hallelujah” made it all the way to #2 on the Top 100. Matthew’s powerful performance had the crowd and the judges raving. Jacquie Lee was the second highest charting singer last week. Her angry, passionate take on “Love is Blindness” showed wisdom and depth beyond her age and announced that she is a force to be reckoned with. I’m not sure what these two will do tonight, but I look forward to seeing them perform. I will not be surprised to see one or both of these singers in the finals.
Team Cee Lo also lost a member last week when two of his singers, Kat Robichaud and Jonny Gray were in the bottom three. The viewers saved Kat using the new instant save feature that debuted last week, but Jonny was sent home. Kat is a powerful singer, but it feels like the audience is getting a little tired of her. If she does something different than her normal power rock style they don’t like it, but last week when she returned to her roots they didn’t embrace her like they had in the past. She could be on thin ice. Caroline Pennell seems to be the favorite on Team Cee Lo right now. I think it will come down to song choice for both of these singers tonight. Both will need good songs that allow them to connect to the audience if they want to continue their journey on “The Voice.”
You can tune in tonight at 9 p.m. on NBC to see the Top 10 singers perform as they compete for a spot in “The Voice” Top 8.
