A fun (and affordable) family spring break can be found at a variety of nearby locations, including Kentucky, which has many state resort parks and Greater Cincinnati is lucky to have one in nearby Carrollton. General Butler State Park opened in 1931 and was one of the first ten parks in the state.
Nestled in the hills overlooking the lovely Kentucky River Valley, General Butler offers a wide variety of recreational activities for families. Warm weather months allow for swimming, golfing and boating, while spring allows for plenty of hiking, fishing, birding, picnicking, tennis and miniature golf (weather permitting). Playgrounds and an activity hall are also available and there are scheduled planned activities.
The Lodge features 53 comfortable rooms, all with a private patio or balcony (some are pet friendly-check in advance), WiFi, as well as the Two Rivers Restaurant, gift shop and lots of places to just sit and relax. There is also a campground and cabins for rent.
Two Rivers’ name and décor is a reference to the Ohio and Kentucky rivers which meet nearby. Two Rivers serves a wide variety of foods including local favorites and supports local farms. Their popular daily lunch buffet and Sunday brunch draw crowds. Menu items can include: catfish, roast beef, and our favorite, banana pudding.
Butler-Turpin State Historic House was built in 1859 and remains today a house museum celebrating one of Kentucky’s leading military families. From the Colonial times, through the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War and the Civil War, the Butler family made military contributions. Personal effects-including furnishings and documents, help bring the story of this family to life.
There’s an app for that! Visiting Kentucky State Parks has gone mobile. This application has advanced GPS maps packed with trail data, the photo way-point feature allows users to click a photo and record the coordinates of plants, animal life or landscape views. Information about all State Parks with contact information, maps, facilities and activities can be found in the app as well.

Please note-some activities and trails do not open until late spring. Check in advance.
