ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY – HQ Nightclub at Revel in Atlantic City was thriving with youthful energy and allure last Sunday, November 24 as Sander van Doorn riveted the club-going crowd with his trademark Doorn sound and energy that fans flocked to experience.
Even a cold, Sunday night in November did not deter New Jersey’s EDM fans from experiencing one of the most desirable, international DJs in the festival and club circuit at Revel casino. The packed club served as a testament to Sander van Doorn’s influence on the electronic dance music scene and young generation.
Van Doorn started his set similarly to the way he begins his radio podcasts, with an introduction from his legendary track “Project T” with Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike. The eloquent melody immediately captivated the audience’s attention and sent goose-bumps over the crowd with its illustrious harmony.
Sander van Doorn showed incredible control over his audience with the music he produced. Whether it was capturing hearts with beautiful melodies one minute or sending ravers into a fury the next, his music literally transported audience members on a journey that evoked feeling and emotion, which is a skill that few DJs performing live can accomplish. While some producers are lucky if they can incorporate one of these elements into their music, van Doorn easily encompasses all of them.
His set ran the gamut with new releases and older van Doorn staples. “Joyenergizer, “Into the Light,” “Neon,” “Kangaroo,” and his recently released track, “Direct Dizko,” out now on Beatport, were among the tracks performed throughout the night. Van Doorn’s live performance diverged from his weekly podcast show, “Identity” by showcasing a variety of tracks that hit a variety of points across the EDM spectrum, which is rarely heard on his weekly shows. In an age where numerous DJs can be predictable and just push buttons, Sander chose to differentiate himself by putting concerted effort into diversifying his track selections, which ultimately created a surprising, excitable experience for those attending.
In addition, HQ Nightclub’s, “pajama party” theme added a playful element to the evening, as girls in lingerie and grown-men dressed ridiculously in “onesies” made it all the more memorable. Sander exuded refined mixing skills by dropping a remixed version of the Eurythmics, “Sweet Dreams” during a full-blown, all-out pillow fight, making it an endearing highlight of the night. It was apparent that the acclaimed DJ was enjoying himself behind the decks as he interacted with the crowd, fist pumped, and showed just as much enthusiasm for the music as his fans did throughout his performance.
For those who arrived prior to the headlining set, Julian Jordan’s opening act was extremely impressive, particularly for a DJ his age. The 17-year-old showcased an adept ability to intermix tracks, which ultimately set the tone for the evening and is a name worth placing on the up-and-coming radar.
Overall, HQ Nightclub’s hand-picked talent, intimate space, and positive aura created a desire to return to venue to re-live the experience another time. HQ Nightclub hosts a slew of parties that feature notable EDM artists each week and is definitely worth checking-out.
