On Saturday November 16th Samurai Comics Phoenix will host the first Indy Comics-A-Go-Go convention. The convention will be from 10am to 5pm, at Samurai Comics 1051 E. Camelback Rd in Phoenix. The show will feature 23 local artists and writers, with their own comics, original artwork, and prints available for purchase.
From Event organizer Jeff Pina:
“The show is meant to focus on comics, and to give people a chance to meet and greet creators in a group in a convention atmosphere, without the overwhelming sensory overload of an actual convention. They will have their comics and artwork available at the shop so if someone wants to pick up a unique or original gift, they will have that on hand.
Writing and drawing comics is a much harder endeavor than most people realize, with some mainstream comics having as many as 10 people working on a book. The independent market is primarily made of a writer/artist team, or sometimes an artist who also writes. Along with that there’s inking, lettering, coloring, editing, pre-press prep, handling the publishing aspect, the marketing of the book, driving or flying around the country to promote the book, all out of their own pockets and risking losing money to do something they love.
Having events like this and getting a chance to have creators meet new fans and reconnect with old ones is a huge drive to them, knowing that they are supported really helps.”
With the holidays fast approaching this convention is a great chance to pick up a unique gift item, or even better to have a one of a kind item made. If you discover an artist with a style that you or someone you know will like, ask them it they are open for commissions, and what their rates are.Don’t be afraid to make it interesting as many artists like the challenge. A drawing of your comic fans favorite character is cool, but if you bring a photo, maybe you can find an a artist to draw them as their favorite character instead.
The blank sketch covers that many comic publishers put out are another great way to get a unique gift item. Find an artist you like and see if they will draw what you like on the cover. If you cant find the blank cover you like, be sure to ask the artists, as they sometimes have some available for specific cover requests.
