Reports of celebrity deaths are common these days and thanks to social media, these reports tend to spread like wildfire. Often, the reports are nothing more than hoaxes and trick fans into believing that their favorite stars have passed. Sometimes though, these reports are true and on Nov. 30, that seemed to be the case when it was reported by TMZ that actor Paul Walker had passed away.
The 40-year-old actor who is most known for his role in “Fast & Furious” passed away after his Porsche crashed into a tree. After the initial crash, Paul Walker’s car reportedly burst into flames.
Immediately after the tragic news broke, social media was in a fire storm over the reported loss of Paul Walker. Quickly, things like “RIP Paul Walker” and “Fast & Furious” began to trend on the social media site Twitter.
According to several outlets, TMZ originally reported, “Sources close to Paul tell us he was in Santa Clarita for a car show to support the Philippines typhoon relief effort, and had been taking friends out for rides in his new Porsche GT. The accident happened during one of those test spins.”
The site also included a photo of the reported crash.
Is this just another hoax, though? Not long ago, Morgan Freeman was rumored to have been died, sending the internet into a firestorm, but that turned out to be nothing more than a hoax. However, even days after it was proved to be a hoax, several of Morgan Freeman’s fans still believed the actor had passed.
Now, Paul Walker fans are treading lightly with this news. Some claim that TMZ isn’t a reliable source (despite the photos) and there are reports that a representative for Paul Walker has said the actor is “alive and well.” The “alive and well” reports turned out to be the real hoax.
However, a rep confirmed the news to Hollywood Life saying, “Sadly, I must confirm that Paul did pass away this afternoon. I don’t have an official statment at this time.”
UPDATE: The official Facebook page for Paul Walker released this statement: “It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend’s car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences. – #TeamPW”
