Held on December 14th, 2013, UFC on Fox 9 was the last free UFC event for the year of 2013 and the card was built with the intention of going out with a bang. With four of Team Alpha Male’s stars in action it was sure to be an exciting card which is exactly what went down in Sacramento, California.
Demetrious Johnson walked into the Octagon looking to hold onto his flyweight champion and needed less than five minutes to strengthen his grip on the 125 pound group.
He and Joesph Benavidez met for the second time but Johnson didn’t need the planned five rounds. The brief action saw a lot of action where the two competitors would move around the cage. During a quick exchange Demetrious caught Joseph with a counter right hand that would put him down. He jumped on top of the challenger to land four more unanswered shots that brought about the finish at the 2:52 point in the round.
This win was Johnson’s third defense of the title and the first time that Benavidez was stopped in his professional career.
Michael McDonald is considered one of the hottest prospects in any division within the Ultimate Fighting Championship and he was placed against one of the sports most well known faces in Urijah Faber.
Faber started out going right for his wrestling style to keep “Mayday” on the mat while mixing in some good strikes. McDonald stayed aggressive but the more experienced competitor did enough to control much of the action.
Faber would shut the young fighter down in the second round to end the fight. McDonald was caught twice charging in by right hand counter shots by the former WEC champion. Stunned, McDonald would try to stagger backwards but Urijah kept the pressure and would drop him with two more right hands. Once on the ground “The California Kid” went for his trademark choke series that forced the tapout at 3:22 of round two.
Chad Mendes and Nik Lentz met in a featherweight feature bout between two top ten ranked competitors. Mendes has been on a tear as he’s looking for his second shot at the 145 pound belt as Lentz has looked very good since dropping down to this weight class.
In the opening seconds Chad Mendes unleashed a fury of strikes which has been his statement in recent bouts. Lentz was rocked multiple times but never was out in the contest.
Over the remaining two rounds, Mendes would go back to his wrestling skills that have built him into a great prospect. Lentz was aggressive but was unable to stop any of the takedowns that came from the Team Alpha Male standout. Mendes used the tactic to continue his climb back to number one contender’s status as he won via unanimous decision.
Joe Lauzon and Mac Danzig started the show in the lightweight division in an important fight for both competitors.
Two well versed grapplers, Lauzon and Danzig exchanged transitions early in the first round of their fight. Joe was able to spend more time in the dominant position but Mac was landing the more powerful shots.
Lauzon controlled much of the fight and was able to land key blows that would open up scarring and bleeding on Mac. Danzig was never able to counter act Lauzon’s mix of grappling and striking which allowed the Massachusetts native to bully his way to a decision victory.
UFC on Fox 9 was a great card of action from top to bottom. Even though it didn’t feature many stoppages, the level of competition put on some great action during the evening.
