One Direction has scored another No. 1 worldwide hit on the iTunes songs chart. “Diana,” which was released on Nov. 18, 2013, has debuted at No. 1 on iTunes in several countries, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal. The song is in the Top 5 on iTunes in other countries, such as the U.K., Switzerland, France, Italy and Japan.
One Direction announced on Nov. 20, 2013, that the group’s 1D Day event that takes place on Nov. 23 will feature appearances by Simon Cowell and other guests. The 1D Day event will include a worldwide Webcast from Los Angeles.
One Direction is gearing up for the worldwide release of the group’s third album, “Midnight Memories,” which is due out on Nov. 25, 2013. One Direction has taken extraordinary steps not to release advance copies of the album to the media, but “Midnight Memories” was leaked online anyway a week before its official release. (Leaks like this are usually done by insiders who work for the record company or the artist, not by journalists.)
The first two singles from “Midnight Memories” — “Best Song Ever” and “Story of My Life” — were Top 10 hits in several countries.
Even though “Midnight Memories” is not being released to the media in advance, One Direction did grant one journalist (The Sun’s head of showbiz Dan Wootton) an official listen of the “Midnight Memories” album before its release. In an article published on Nov. 17, 2013, Wootton described the super-secret lengths he had to go through to listen to the album, as if it were some kind of undercover operation for the government. Wootton also has a very detailed, exclusive review of the album, which he calls a “one of the best boy band albums ever.”
Wootton had this to say about One Direction’s “Diana” song: “One of the most fun boyband odes to a girl I’ve heard, with lyrics including: ‘I speak a different language but still hear your call.’ It has a soaring opening and the chorus is instantly catchy. Louis and Liam — the two members of the group who have contributed the most songs on the album — co-wrote it. And don’t worry, I’m assured it’s not an ill-judged reference to the late Princess Di.”
One Direction is the world’s biggest-selling act to emerge from “The X Factor.” The group’s first two albums (“Up All Night” and “Take Me Home”) debuted at No. 1 in several countries. “Midnight Memories” is expected to do the same. One Direction is signed to Syco Music, the record company co-owned by Simon Cowell and Sony Music.
While in Los Angeles, One Direction is set to perform on “The X Factor” U.S. on Nov. 21, 2013, and on the American Music Awards on Nov. 24, 2013. One Direction is nominated for two prizes at the awards show.
