‘Blazing Saddles’ is the 1974 film directed by Mel Brooks. Screenwriters were Andrew Bergman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Norman Steinberg and Al Uger.
Governor William J. Le Petomane (Mel Brooks) and State Attorney General Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman) are in it for the money, power and prestige. Lamarr is the power behind the throne. Easily manipulating Le Petomane to do whatever he wants. Everything he does is in the boss’ name. If a plan backfires the Governor gets the blame. In public, Lamarr plays the role of a helpless civil servant.
Their latest scheme is a land grab. The town of Rock Ridge lies in the path of their railroad. Since the people won’t sell they will drive them out anyway they can. Eventually they figure racism will do the trick. Trouble-maker and ex-railroad worker Bart (Cleavon Little), a Black man, is appointed Sherriff. But Le Petomane and Lamarr seriously underestimated him.
The man thinks on his feet, is extraordinarily charming and can sell ice to Inuit. Bart becomes fast friends with another outcast. The town drunk is the famous gunslinger The Waco Kid (Gene Wilder). He gave up the gunslinger lifestyle then crawled into a bottle. Together they turn the town’s citizens and alienated railroad worker population into allies. Thraw evil plans and scheming to their advantage.
The good: Guaranteed to make you laugh until you cry and can’t breathe. Timeless classic that never gets old. The entire main and supporting cast is a comedic dream team. Not a bad apple in the bunch. Seen billion times and will keep watching. Harvey Korman stole the movie from beginning to end. The Count Basie Orchestra added a touch of class to the joint. Mongo! Lili von Shtupp. Hedley Lamarr.
The reel fight of good vs. evil also occurring in real life. The title song. Sight gags! Breaking the fourth wall repeatedly. Couldn’t look at statues for a long time because of that scene. Booked solid at the gallows. Rock Ridge church folk singing their woes at Sunday’s service. Gabby Johnson’s reaction to and warning about Bart. Bart’s life story putting Jim to sleep.
The most unexpected and funniest fart joke in history. The brute squad Mongo taking on the town. I’m so tired segment. Excuse me while I whip this out. Son you’re on your own. Baby you’re so talented and they are so dumb. Pawn in the game of life. You men are only risking your lives, while I am risking an almost-certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor!
Do that voodoo that you do so well! Le Petomane found the perfect lover in Lili von Shtupp. Bart and Jim riding off into the sunset in style.
The bad: The jokes aren’t PC and people may find the name calling offensive. But then again everyone is insulted and made fun of in this film.
The ugly: You didn’t want it to end.
