It’s been over two decades since George Strait won Entertainer of the Year at the CMA Awards, but in this, his final year of touring after an illustrious 30-plus year career, George Strait stood in the spot of honor once again.
On November 6, George Strait was named the 2013 Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association, and he was truly humbled by the award.
When Robin Roberts announced his name, the other nominees could be seen rising from their seats in excitement, but George Strait stayed in his spot, pinching he eyes to stall the emotion, and lingering in a display of affection with his wife.
Meanwhile, Keith Urban leapt up and pumped the air with both fists, Eric Church clapped heartily, and the entire audience was on their feet, showing their appreciation for George Strait’s legendary contribution to country music.
When the classy cowboy finally lumbered up to the stage, he placed his hand over his heart in deep-felt appreciation, but then surprised everyone with his disbelief by joking , “What?”
After a rumble of laughter throughout the audience, George Strait continued by saying, “Oh my gosh, never in a million years…thank you so much. My dad’s been having some pretty good conversations up there, I have to say. Thank you to the CMA. This blows me away. I can not believe it. You guys that were nominated are such powerful entertainers. I’m just so thrilled to even be nominated again. Thank you to my record company, MCA, my wife Norma, my son Bubba, Tamara, and my little grandbaby boy. This means the world to me and I appreciate it.”
George Strait edged out the younger nominees, Jason Aldean, Taylor Swift, Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton to take home the honor that will surely mean even more to him as he moves into the semi-retirement stage of his life.
George Strait has nearly twenty CMA awards, as well as over 75 music industry awards to his credit.
