Known to ‘Supernatural’ fans as the Men of Letters character of James Haggerty from the 1930s flashback scene of ‘Slumber Party,’ Gildart Jackson talks about his amazing experience filming the show. Known for his role as Giles the Butler on ABC’s series ‘Whodunnit’ as well as his role in the film ‘You,” this talented actor talks about the great time he had on the set.
Q. You played the character of James Haggerty, a Men of Letters character in Supernatural’s recent episode ‘Slumber Party.’ How did the cast and crew welcome you to the set?
A. You get the temperature of the set very quickly and I could tell that it is a really smoothly running and generous set. Everybody was so nice to me and extremely pleasant. I actually didn’t have any scenes with the two lead men, but the more I interacted on the set, I realized that the two lead actors are loved by all the people on the set, and they couldn’t have said nicer things about both of them. Apparently they both have sort of grown up doing the show. They were young men and now both of them are married, and there is an immense amount of love for the two. When I did the episode they said that if it works out, they might bring the characters back. You guys start talking about how much you want the old Men of Letters to come back, and maybe we will.
Q. What was it like to get to film on such an amazing set?
A. It was gorgeous. It was amazing. While I was waiting to film the shot, all of those books are real. You can really take them out and have a look at weird stuff from way back when. It’s a really great set. I Iove Vancouver. I worked the beginning of the episode and the end of the episode, so I had a nice little vacation, frankly.
Q. Tell your fans about the projects that are you currently working on.
A. Well, I’m sort of waiting for the next gig. An actor’s life is you wait for the next audition. My big hope is that the show I did over the Summer called ‘Whodunnit’ will get picked up. It was probably the most fun I’ve had making a TV show. We made nine episodes. I played the butler, the host of this very strange reality show. That was great. In the mean time I keep myself busy doing a lot of audio books. I’ve done a lot of voiceover work.
Q. Do you have any hidden talents?
Any aspirations I might have had to be a painter were dashed at an early age. I do write. I’ve written some screenplays. My wife (Melora Hardin) and I actually made a movie that I wrote called ‘You.’ She directed it and I was in It and she was in it. People who like ‘Supernatural’ might like ‘Smallville.’ Allison Mack ,who is an old friend of ours, is in the film. I don’t really have a hobby, but I do sing, but that’s a sort of professional thing. I don’t have a hobby—I don’t collect hats or anything like that.
Q. If you were a baseball player, what would your walk up song be?
A. I know a lot of people do take inspiration from music that way, but I don’t really. I once was very much in to Tom Waite. If I’m going to an audition, would put on the 70’s station and get some disco going.
