Today’s guest is Angela Fiddler, author of the paranormal erotica, The Care and Feeding of Sex Demons. Angela wrote her first erotic novel as a birthday present to a friend who had requested kneeling and vampires. While the vampires come and go in the story, the kneeling remains. Angela likes smut, dark humor and stories that mix erotica with raw emotion. She talks about writing and her characters at www.angelafiddler.com.
Thank you for this interview, Angela. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
I wrote my first book when I was eleven. You could have ticked the box off for every cliché, white talking horse, magic sword, prophesy, farm boy who turns out to be king, but it was a start. While I was teaching English in Japan, I discovered slash which is a kind of fanfic that pairs two male leads together, and jumping from playing in someone else’s sandbox back into my own was just the next logical step.
Can you tell us briefly what your book is about?
Keeping a sex demon happy and well fucked is always the safest option, even if you have your own relationship issues. When saving the world on a regular basis, a happy home is very important.
Cy’s job as an apocalypse stopper isn’t an easy one at the best of times, but with the help of his weird family, he survives. Sure, he sneaks out every once and a while to watch August his sex demon feed, but he loves and is committed to Patrick, his fae prince lover, even if it means giving up the anal penetrative sex he loves and Patrick has issues with.
All adult relationships are based on compromise. It’s just that most don’t require fucking a sex demon to keep him alive and non-murder-y at the same time as you’re trying to quit your job to save the world on your own time.
Why did you choose your particular genre?
I absolutely love mixing the mundane, magic and snark. Bringing the everyday into extraordinary context allows to build some truly powerful images. Real life is complex enough, but mixing sex demons and fast food breakfast allows for a very unique voice—and gets you sausage and eggs after eleven a.m.
What was your greatest challenge writing this book?
Sex demons feed on sex, but it’s impossible to talk about sucubi and incubi without dealing with the issue of consent. Keeping the story light and sarcastic while dealing the real issues of race and consent was a balancing act.
Are you published by a traditional house, small press or are you self-published?
Loose Id is a small press but is still a traditional publishing press.
Was it the right choice for you?
I think small press is a great first step in making GLBT erotica more widely available.
How are you promoting your book thus far?
By writing the best book I could. I’m doing blog tours and maintaining my writing blog at www.angelafiddler.com
How is that going for you?
I’ll let you know in February.
Can you tell us one thing you have done that actually resulted in one or more sales?
I could say I had professional covers made and tried to write the best books possible.
This is my first book out since 2009 and the ebook world has really changed. I write the best story I can, mixing real world issues with magic, sex and snark. I brought my vampire books, the Master of the Lines series back into print on smashwords and Amazon, so to answer your question I would say I made my books available to purchase.
Do you have another job besides writing?
I’ve worked teaching in Canada and overseas, and in adult education, but find that teaching draws from the same creative well as writing. Right now, this is my full-time job.
If you could give one book promotion tip to new authors, what would that be?
No one asks a beginner painter how to better sell their first painting. Ideally, write a book with a unique voice that says something about the human condition and is relatable to your ideal reader. The best promotion in the world cannot sell a book to someone who does not want to read it.
What’s next for you?
My next book, Coral were his Bones, will be available through Loose Id sometime this spring.
As a selkie, Finn mates for a very long life. He and Devon have grown up with their lives entwined and intended for each other, but a cruel man stole his heart away and bound him in servitude. As the years pass, Finn gets sucked deeper into his memories until he’s drowning. Ancient laws aren’t broken easily but Finn is fading away. When Finn comes to see Devon on the one night a year he’s free, they both know it’s Finn last chance. He already bears the brands for his misbehavior. If he gets caught, he knows he will be in more trouble than he’s worth.
About the Book:
Keeping a sex demon happy and sexually satisfied is always the safest option, even if Cy has his own relationship issues. When saving the world on a regular basis, a happy home is important, especially when mixing human, fae princes and a starving sex demon.
