Love Crushed Velvet are a New York band with a style all their own. Taking from rock’s bluesy, gritty past, the band brings in a fresh perspective to make their sound their own.
The band’s latest EP, ‘Delusions,’ was released on September 24. ‘Delusions’ is the follow-up to the band’s self-titled debut full-length, released in 2010. The EP’s first single, “Revolution Time,” premiered on Artist Direct in August.
I had the chance to catch up with Love Crushed Velvet singer A.L.X. and drummer Massimo Majorana after their set at Tammany Hall on October 16 (part of Big Picture Media’s afternoon CMJ 2013 showcase) to discuss the new EP, the band, and getting inspired by New York.
You recently released a new EP. Could you tell me a little about the EP and the recording process for it?
A.L.X.: What we tried to do was we tried to come up with a sound that was an evolution from our first record which was very classic rock influenced kind of sound. What we tried to do on this one was pull back the guitars a little bit. We purposely went for a retro sound initially. And so on ‘Delusions,’ it was really more about trying to fast forward that into 2013 but still keep some of that retro energy in it.
How does the sound differ from your debut album?
A.L.X.: Less retro, more modern…
Massimo: More laid back than…
A.L.X.: …It’s not as angst-y, it’s not as aggressive a record as the first one. That’s not to say we won’t go back to that, but… Yeah, because you want your sound to evolve, you don’t want to be making the same vocal choice. You can make the same record alternately… It’s about progress.
How did the band start?
A.L.X.: The line-up we have now is different than the line-up we had originally. I was originally playing with two guys that were backing me as a solo artist. We had kind of based around the sound that group had evolved into. It was really fun with the bassist for the first record. This… I think that ‘Delusions’ and everything going forward is really going to be much more reflective of a lot of the stuff that Mas and I are doing together right now.
Your bio makes it clear that you have a very “New York” sound. How has living in New York inspired you guys?
A.L.X.: Everything here, every second that you’re here, you’re influenced by something. Living in New York as an artist is just basically being a sponge in this giant vortex of energy and influences and stuff. Even walking down the street, there are three, four, five different things that will influence you. Something will influence you stylistically, which in its own way can influence your song of the day. What you wear kind of influences how you feel. You know, it’s like, the stuff you hear coming out of a bar…
Massimo: It’s like everything is inspiration, it’s all out here…
A.L.X.: It’s an amazing place to be creative.
