If you love your feline companions, then Homer’s Odyssey is a MUST READ!!!! The author of this memoir is Gwen Cooper, a best-selling Novelist. I kept seeing this book on many store shelves and never picked it up because I thought it was just another sappy pet story. Boy, was I wrong and this book is “not just another cat tale” (no pun intended).
The book is about the incredible life of Homer ( a black cat who lost his eyesight due to neglect and disease as a kitten) and Gwen ( his owner). The story tells about how Gwen acquired Homer and the trials she went through with Homer and the other cats she has, Vashti and Scarlett. All of Gwen’s friends, family, ex-boyfriends, and anyone who meets Homer falls in love with him. In every chapter there are anecdotes of Homer’s extraordinary abilities like catching flies in mid air, surviving 9/11, teaching himself to use the human toilet, and warming the hearts of the most dog-centered people. Even you will fall in love with Homer, the whirling dervish.
Pictures of Homer and his sisters are featured at the beginning of every chapter followed by a foreshadowing lyric from the poem, “The Odyssey,” by Homer. The author uses many devices to describe Homer. One particular favorite is, “He’s Daredevil, the famed Marvel Comics superhero who lost his sight in an accident while saving a blind man, but who gained super human use of all his senses.”
This book would appeal to anybody who loves animals, adventure, comedy, suspense, love stories, and self realization, while pulling at your heart strings.
I can relate to this story and the author because we share many similarities including having three cats, Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Writing, and having to move back home with your family at age 27. We both have endured many of the same life lessons the author shares throughout the book. I was so compelled by her love for Homer’s safety and well-being and that she can love an animal so much that at times it cost her everything, but she was still able to move ahead in life with vigor and excitement.
Tiny T gives Homer’s Odyssey 4 out of 4 paws!!
***An Author’s note: While I was writing this, my cats, Mickey and Mary Moon, decided that they were going to curl up next to me, one on each side and sleep. I guess they are showing their support for my writing. ***
