The holiday rush is upon us. Time to put up the tree, send out cards and buy all those presents, not to mention clean the house and wrap the presents! During the frenzy, it’s easy to forget to keep things green. Here are a few ideas to make your gifts for the little ones a little more environmentally friendly.
Keep it local | Buying toys made near your home not only reduce the impact of transportation on the environment, but the money is kept in the region. Although heavy on non renewable plastic, Little Tikes products are made right in Hudson, Ohio. Also be sure to frequent craft shows or even visit Etsy where you can use their shop local tool.
Choose brands that are known for their sustainability work | Plan Toys, Melissa and Doug, Hape Toys, Green Toys and Green Sprouts are just a few well known green brands.
Reduce Wrapping | Wrapping paper is recyclable! Always reuse your gift bags. Or take it a step further and purchase or sew cloth or felt bags that can be used Christmas after Christmas!
Compost Your Tree | Don’t let the garbage man dispose of your Christmas tree in the landfill. Many Cleveland area communities will compost trees left out during certain times. There are also a number of drop off sites. Find more information at the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District’s website here.
Recycle Your Christmas Lights | The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District will recycle any Christmas light dropped off at their Garfield Heights location.
