According to the Spengler Cup website on Tuesday, former Calgary Flame Matthew Lombardi is a Spengler Cup champion.
On Tuesday, Lombardi recorded an assist on an empty net goal by Kaspars Daugavins as Geneve-Servette of Switzerland defeated CSKA Moscow 5-3 in the championship final in Davos, Switzerland. Kevin Romy, a former draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers (4th round in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft) notched a multi-point game as he recorded a goal and an assist.
Lombardi, who did much better in the faceoff circle on Tuesday in winning eight of 13 draws, played for the Calgary Flames from 2003-2009. His best season in a Flames uniform came in 2007 when he had a career high 20 goals. He also notched 46 points. According to www.hockeydb.com, Lombardi has 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points in his first professional season in Switzerland, after spending last year with the Phoenix Coyotes and Anaheim Ducks.
