Can you imagine a house on a beach in Maryland with only the sand for your back patio? The smell of the surf lingers in the air mingling with the sound of the gulls. I spent time in such a home during my days as a nanny, and while you’d think that I’d remember the surf and the sand, mostly, what I actually remember are the Maryland crab cakes.
It’s likely that you’re thinking, “Those must have been some crab cakes.”
And they were. The family I lived with brought some samples of this appetizer home along with the seasoned shelled crabs that we ate alongside them. We sat in swimsuits on the beach front and cracked the crabs with nutcrackers. And then stuffed our faces with this Maryland crab cake recipe between bites of the shelled crab.

Easy Maryland Crab Cakes Recipe. Or How to Make Crab Cakes With Fewer Than 10 Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp pancake mix
- 1 Tbsp yellow mustard
- 3 Tbsp mayo
- 1 Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 lb cooked crabmeat (make sure it’s flaked)
- 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp Old Bay seasoning
- Garlic salt to taste
- 2 Tbsp veggie oil
- Stir the mustard, mayo, pancake mix, egg, parsley and the seasonings in a medium-size bowl.
- Add in the crab meat, folding it into the mixture.
- Form the crab into crab cakes, measuring 3-inches in diameter.
- Fry the crab cakes in a large skillet, making sure that the skillet has enough oil to immerse the cakes halfway.
- Cook them long enough to make them brown on each side — should take about eight minutes to cook the Maryland crab cakes recipe.
- Drain them on paper towels.
- Serve them with a squeeze of lemon or tartar sauce.
