The Michigan Gnome, who helps me with Detroit fantasy football picks, broke his right leg shortly after picking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to beat the Lions, 31-30, in a week #12 game.
Of course, he got the score wrong but the Gnome has picked the winner of the last two Lions’ games. He picked Detroit to lose on the road in week #11 and picked Tampa Bay today.
The Gnome is uncertain of what caused him to slip and fall in the Martins’ kitchen, but did complain yesterday about feeling dizzy after witnessing the Michigan Wolverines lose their fourth Big Ten game of the season. (The Gnome is currently celebrating his recent predicting success in a recliner in the family room.)
PREDICTIONS AND RESULTS
“Hometown Hero” – Calvin Johnson (aka “Megatron”) was selected as the No. 1 wide receiver to start in week 12 despite the fact that he would be covered by Tampa Bay cornerback Darrelle Revis. Unfortunately, Megatron got drilled on the Lions’ last offensive play of the game and turned the ball over to the Buccaneers.
“Surprise and Delight” – With Nate Burleson returning to the lineup, running back Reggie Bush should have more room to run the ball against the Tampa Bay defense. Bush had 100 yards of total offense, but failed to score a touchdown.
“Hometown Zero” – Running back Joique Bell is listed as “questionable” and really should not play in this game. Bell ran six times for 15 yards.
“And one more thing . . .” – For the second week in a row, we are going to emphasize protecting the quarterback. The team that gives their quarterback enough time to read the defense and complete passes will win. Tampa Bay’s Mike Glennon was well protected throughout the game and threw two touchdown passes and no interceptions. Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes and four interceptions.
Summary – The Michigan Gnome is now 6-5 and I’ve fallen to 5-6, because the Detroit Lions continue to turn the ball over against lesser opponents. Five turnovers are difficult for any team to overcome and the biggest reason that Tampa Bay beat Detroit, 24-21, today.
“I wish I had him this week” – For Detroit fantasy owners with stars from other teams, here are three players that should have a better than average game in week #11:
- Quarterback Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos
- Running back Matt Forte, Chicago Bears
- Wide receiver Andre Johnson, Houston Texans
“Expect a Downturn” – Here are three players whose performances will be on fantasy football’s downside in week 12:
- Quarterback Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins
- Running back Donald Brown, Indianapolis Colts
- Wide receiver Greg Jennings, Minnesota Vikings
