In yet another affront to free speech, the popular chain restaurant “Cracker Barrel” posted on Facebook Friday that they have “removed selected products” that they were “concerned might offend” some of their patrons.
Cracker Barrel made the decision in the wake of “Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson’s widely publicized comments made during a GQ interview, as reported at the Examiner.
TMZ clarified the products being removed, saying,
“We called a bunch of Cracker Barrel stores, and the managers told us the products that were removed were the ones that had Phil’s face plastered on the packaging.”
Phil Robertson was quickly condemned for his perceived “anti-gay” remarks after he was asked what he considered to be “sinful.” Expressing this opinion was enough for his network, A&E, to “indefinitely” suspend the popular reality television star.
The backlash from first amendment advocates was swift, and the Facebook page “Boycott A&E Until Phil Robertson Is Put Back On Duck Dynasty” accumulated a whopping 1.7 million “likes” as of the time of this writing.
Syndicated talk show host Mark Levin, on his Friday evening broadcast, pointed out sarcastically that A&E is “so principled” that the network is not only airing episodes with Phil Robertson which have already been filmed, but the network is also running marathons of the popular show, leading any thinking person to believe that they are capitalizing on the controversy.
Wayne Dupree, who is known as the “News Ninja,” also pointed out this hypocrisy on his website. Dupree has been a strong advocate for Phil Robertson since it was reported that he was suspended from A&E, as reported at the Examiner.
The responses to Cracker Barrel’s Facebook post are overwhelmingly negative. In fact, the first fifty comments currently on the post were against Cracker Barrel.
One person wrote,
“After you are done removing the selected products, go ahead and remove a bunch of tables and chairs……you won’t be needing them any more.”
Another person wrote,
“My church group had plans to have our luncheon at your establishment next week. Since you had no issue offending our church group, you leave us no alternative but take our business elsewhere…”
“I find this very odd, since most of the customers I see in your establishment are grey haired conservatives like myself. I won’t be back…”
A “Boycott Cracker Barrel” Facebook page has over 6,500 “likes” at the time of this writing.
