DELTA COUNTY, COLORADO – As first reported by KREX-TV in Grand Junction, Colorado, A Delta County Colorado School Board member has been facing major criticism after derogatory comments she made about Transgender men and women during a school board meeting back in October.
The derogatory comments were made by school board member Katherine Svenson who said:
“I would like to pass out something that shows people what is going on in the rest of the country. Massachusetts and California have passed laws relating to calling a student, irrespective of his biological gender, letting him perform as the gender he thinks he is, or she is. I just want to emphasize: not in this district. Not until the plumbing’s changed. There would have to be castration in order to pass something like that around here.”
Svenson was referring to those states which have recently passed laws granting transgender students the right to use the public restrooms of the gender they identify with. All total, seventeen states, including Colorado and the District of Columbia, currently have laws outlawing transgender discrimination.
Last June, Colorado’s Civil Rights Division ruled in favor of a law granting transgender students the right to use restrooms for the gender that they identify as. The ruling involved the case of Coy Mathis, a 6-year-old Colorado Springs girl who was prevented from using the girls’ restroom at her school by school district officials.
When later questioned by KREX-TV about her derogatory comments, Svenson had the following to say:
“I don’t have a problem if some boys think they are girls, I’m just saying as long as they can impregnate a woman, they’re not going to go in the girls’ locker-room.”
Though Svenson remains unapologetic about her comments, other Delta County Colorado School Board officials have stated that they do not share Svenson’s point of view regarding the issue.
According to Svenson’s bio page on the district website, Svenson is the founder of an evangelical Christian ministry in northern India, as well as a volunteer teacher at a local Sunday School and Bible camp.
