According to a Dec. 15 post from Bloody Elbow, UFC President Dana White explained that he was extremely embarrassed that Cody McKenzie wore basketball shorts and left the price tag on for his UFC on Fox 9 fight against Sam Stout.
“Yeah how did ya like that one? That was fantastic right? What that was was UFC amateur hour,” White said at the UFC on Fox 9 post-fight presser. “We have a guy backstage that polices all the things, when you got a guy going out there…first of all, if it’s not bad enough that he’s out there with basketball shorts on, how about that he’s still got the price tag on the shorts during the fight! Yeah, so it was pretty embarrassing.”
White ultimately pinned the blame on the UFC for not checking McKenzie’s shorts prior to his walkout.
“That’s one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen, and it’s even weirder that we let it happen,” White said of the Mckenzie shorts snafu. “Maybe he was going to fight in his jeans and said ‘well, maybe I should get some shorts. I don’t know. Cody McKenzie’s a strange dude. But it’s not Cody McKenzie’s fault that happened tonight, it’s the UFC’s fault. We’re here for a show on Fox, and it’s pretty damn embarrassing.
“Pretty embarrassing. I could not be more embarrassed by this. I don’t even know what to say. We’re stupid. I was pissed.”
McKenzie, 25, also underperformed in the fight itself, as he dropped a unanimous decision to Stout.
McKenzie has now gone 3-4 in his seven UFC appearances, including losses to Chad Mendes and Yves Edwards.
Time will tell if his loss to Stout spells the end of his UFC career, but it’s not looking good for him at present time. Between the loss and his shorts snafu, McKenzie could be done in the UFC.
