The 2013 CMA Awards red carpet was packed with country music’s biggest names on Wednesday night, with the stars all decked out in their designer duds and borrowed jewels. Some looks were huge hits, while others fizzled and fell flat.

In general, Taylor Swift looks ravishing in red, but her prom-style gown Wed. night looked better suited to a high school winter ball. (Unfortunately, that wasn’t the only problem; Taylor’s lipstick was also smeared down to her chin during her Pinnacle Award acceptance speech.) Luckily, her hair saved the look from being a complete bore; we loved the ends pinned under like that! Best dressed hair of the night, at least!

Country Music Awards co-host, presenter and performer Carrie Underwood looked gorgeous throughout her many wardrobe changes Wed. night, but we think she made best dressed and worst dressed almost at the same time. While Carrie walked the red carpet in a neither best-nor-worst shimmery gold and nude number, it was the pink polka dot mess she wore at one point during the show that rubbed us the completely wrong way. But the tiny-but-tasteful black jumpsuit? Loved it! Best dressed nods for that look for sure.

We think actress and singer Hayley Orrantia will take flak for her multi-colored frock with the fitted, lacey color-blocked bodice and sweeping floral-patterned skirts. You know what? We’re going to have to disagree. Best dressed, for effort and whimsy alone! Technically speaking, we think the back of Hayley’s gown looked a little off, where the skirt and bodice met, and the colors seemed oddly both muted and bright at the same time. Still…one of the more interesting looks of the night, paired with simple, classic hair and makeup.
Sadly, our worst dressed pick went to a dress we wanted to love, and would have…if it had been on Sofia Vergara instead of Cassadee Pope; the actress just couldn’t quite fill out the bold, structured design of the gown. Turns out what they say is true: too much of a good thing can be bad.
