After seeing this film I cannot echo that sentiment any less. Contracted is a film that has taken the viral sub genre of horror by storm. Contracted stars Najarra Townsend (Dawning), Caroline Williams, and Alice MacDonald and follows Samantha, (Townsend) a young woman who makes a fatal mistake of a one night stand. Now normally its takes some time for a mistake like that to become fatal, but that’s not the case here. In Contracted there is only a three day span of terror and we get to follow every it every step of the way.
This film will be hard for most moviegoers just on the premise itself. But at a time where gruesomeness is at it’s peak gore hounds may not appreciate the slow pace of Contracted. Personally my only issue with the movie is the lead character Samantha as it seemed if a general notion of common sense was lacking in her. It would be appropriate that way as without the critical bad decisions of her the film would not exist. That being said Contracted is not one of my favorite to come under the IFC umbrella but there are many things to like about Contracted.
The film starts off with the donor of the virus pursuing a necrophiliac lifestyle as he is shown having sex with a corpse. If that is not bad enough he also takes a vile of a liquid substance from the corpse along with him. Samantha seems to be at a major point of confusion in her life as her lover no longer seems interested in her. Even though there seems to be more than enough suitors for Samantha she only wants to be with Nikki. Her closest friend Alice tries to cheer her up at a party she is hosting by doing the number one thing to cure a broken heart. Get her wasted. This of course makes Samantha vulnerable and leads her to be manipulated by the culprit BJ (Simon Barrett/You’re Next).
Soon after we get to see many of the ailments going on in Samantha’s life and how they coincide with the virus. One of the smartest things in Contracted is how the symptoms start off with many things women fear and become a whole another issue at face value. Literally. I’m sure by now you guys have seen the poster of Samantha from the film and to be honest that’s when she is at her best. Similar to most horror of this nature the true scare factor is not really found on film but more of what could be in real life. STD s are at an all time high right now so I applaud the director Eric England (Madison County) for going after a such a daring topic.
I would have liked more from Contracted but for what it was I think the point was well driven. Fans of movies like Excision, May, Teeth and the such may find Contracted pleasing as the tone of those films is well represented here. What they won’t be a fan of are the constant blunders of the lead character that’s unfortunately needed to make this film succeed. The gore in this film reminds me of the remake of The Fly starring Jeff Goldblum and when you see Contracted I think you will agree. Films like these are hard to recommend to people unless you know the types of films they enjoy but I will say Contracted is worth seeing.
Contracted will be available on demand and in limited theaters on November 22nd. I would advise you not to watch it after your Thanksgiving festivities! For more information on contracted visit their website here: http://www.ifcfilms.com/films/contracted
