Almost every person who celebrates Christmas this year is well aware of Charles Dickens classic 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol. The timeless tale about the bitter and miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge hating Christmas until he is visited by three magical spirits and changes his ways has been ingrained in the minds of millions of people. It has appeared through countless adaptations to theater, radio, television, and movies over the years. As such, it’s difficult to tell the story from a fresh perspective unless one comes up with a quirky new twist in their adaptation. For Chicago Catholics, such an opportunity has arrived this year. The Little Flowers Dance & Theatre Troupe is presenting “The Conversion of Scrooge” on December 1, 2013. What exactly does their production give us? Basically, it’s now a Catholic Christmas Carol.
“The Conversion of Scrooge” is being performed as musical theater, so it involves singing, dancing, and acting portions of the play. The cast consists of actors of both genders and all ages (from 4 years old to seniors) , and the audience is intended for all ages as well. What makes this take on Scrooge unique is the story is being done from a religious viewpoint – Ebeneezer Scrooge not only finds the spirit of Christmas cheer in his heart by the end of the story, he also finds faith in Jesus Christ and quits sneering “Bah, Humbug!” about the Catholic faith.
At the time of this writing, it appears tickets may already be sold out for the show’s two December 1st performances – both the Sunday Matinee showing at 12:00p.m., and the Sunday Afternoon showing at 4:00p.m. So because of the lateness of my column, have you missed out on your chance to see this cool new twist on the Charles Dickens story? Hardly. You can still go to the theater troupe’s website and order the show on DVD, or plan on coming as part of a group outing with your local choir, rosary group or school organization that paid in advance.
