In a previous 90 Minutes of Separation posting, we highlighted some festive events along the Wine Road. Now it’s time to train our focus on the many destinations around Vallejo that are serving up holiday spirit…and some great values along the way.
In this initial segment we visit The Unconventional Garden, which opened its doors in early November, 2013. Located in Vallejo’s downtown shopping district on Marin Street, this destination stakes its roots in an area that many Vallejoans hope will blossom into a lively city scene.
The Unconventional Garden is owner Michelle Eliker’s first foray into the world of retail business. An avid and veteran gardener, Eliker told us that she loves embellishing her garden with decorative accents. But the garden ornamentation that catches her eye is often priced outside of her reach. So, calculating that she is not alone in her desire to dress up her garden without severely dressing down her budget, Eliker decided to open her shop, featuring accessories that are easy on the eye and the wallet.
We dropped by the Garden earlier this week to check out her inventory. It’s easy to visualize how her selections can add pop to gardens of all sizes: The colored glass and reflective surfaces that are signature elements of many of her products are fashioned in playful and often stylized ways. Nothing heavy-handed or over-wrought here to compete with nature’s own artistry.
Eliker is interested in showcasing local artists, such as the tiled works of Vallejo artist, Sherry Tobin (see our accompanying slide show). Eliker hopes to not only attract local talent but also fellow gardeners who will gather at her shop to swap advice and inspiration.
Like all vibrant gardens, she looks forward to seeing The Unconventional Garden grow and evolve.
